Matthew took the first shot. We were merely firing back. Frederick always went after those closest to Matthew, but since the closest person to him was my daughter, she was off limits. I knew how much I’d fractured our relationship, so I didn’t permit Frederick to target any of her friends, either. However, Matthew attacked our business, so we were going to cripple his.

It was time to pay Sisters of Mercy one more visit.

I’d visited the vampire asylum a few times to check in on Taylor. It was easy to become one of their V.I.P. customers and even easier to hide my identity.

I knew it was working because I’d even been escorted in the halls right past Matthew on one occasion, and he didn’t even give me a second glance.

It only took a few visits to start requesting certain patients—one in particular.

The asylum was full of cameras, except for in the patient rooms, where V.I.P. members such as myself were granted full privacy.

As long as the patient was still breathing when I left, there were no questions asked.

My daughter liked to complain to me about Frederick and Fangloria when her love Matthew ran an asylum so much worse. Fangloria didn’t hold a candle to the cruelty inflicted in Sisters of Mercy. Now, she was just another hypocrite, willing to look the other way when it served her.

I had never been concerned with breaking Taylor out of the asylum. I’d never liked her anyway. Frederick didn’t want to raise any suspicion as long as she was in relatively good health. And she was, especially when the whispers spread that she wasn’t to be harmed—played with, yes, but not harmed. I was not responsible for that.

It was more important for me to keep my cover intact. Frederick had other little birds for that.

Now I was tasked with retaliating against Matthew’s precious hospital, it was time to break out the promiscuous blonde Society girl too.

She’d make for terrible bait, but we didn’t want to leave Matthew with anything.

At the night-to-morning shift change, I followed a nurse home and got her keycard. Now I was one of them, I no longer took pleasure in killing vampires, but still did what was necessary. I shot her with wood-encased bullets and placed her body in the sunlight without hesitation.

When I returned to Sisters of Mercy, there were fewer cars in the parking lot. The day shift was busy cleaning up the mess from V.I.P.s like myself. From the information I could gather, there were usually only one or two nurses during the day shift, sometimes a nurse and a doctor.

Matthew’s friend Jack, who now ran operations for the hospital, was typically in early and stayed late. I knew his car and it was still in the lot.

With my newly acquired keycard, I breezed right through the front door.

No one was occupying the receptionist’s desk, so I continued without obstacles into the body of the hospital, which I’d gotten to know quite well over the past year.

When you project that you belong, most people assume you do.
